Where you can find them:

Swimming around at Barton’s Lagoon or you can spot them from the bird hide at Boggy Pond. They can be found throughout the North Island from Northland to Wairarapa.

What they look like:

A small brown-greyish bird with yellow eyes. Their chicks are very cute and ride around on their parents back until they get too heavy.

Did you know:

Like a submarine, they can change their buoyancy by adjusting the angle of their waterproof feathers.
