can regrow lost limbs

Where you can find them:

In freshwater such as ponds, wetlands, lakes and streams – only in New Zealand. The best way to spot them is to go out to a stream after dark with a torch. You’ll see their little eyes reflecting in the water.

What they look like:

Like miniature lobsters, they are brown with a bumpy, scaly shell. They are patterned to blend in with the rocks they hide among, which protects them from predators.

Did you know:

Females carry between 20 and 200 eggs, and for their first few months the baby kōura cling on to their mothers with their pincers.
