Donalds Creek

Planting at Donald's Creek 2016

Planting at the Harrison Street site near Donald's Creek 2016

The biodiversity of Donald's Creek, as it winds its way from the northern outskirts of Featherston down to Wairarapa Moana, is benefiting from the restoration efforts of the Featherston Youth Programme.

The planting of wetland plants, within an area that is a flood detention basin, is a new project for the Featherston Youth Programme. The planting of harakeke/flaxes and ti kouka/cabbage trees is to enhance the ability of the area to function as a wetland.  Donald’s Creek is a stream that runs through Featherston and is a tributary to Lake Wairarapa. So the planting highlights the importance of wetlands and the connection of the community with Wairarapa Moana.

Featherston Youth Programme

The Featherston Youth Programme is a group of adult volunteers and youth of Featherston.  The planting near Donald's Creek is an initiative to engage the youth and Featherston community in an awareness of their local environmental and biodiversity issues.
