Project Partners

Each Project partner has a different role in the maintenance and protection of our environment and for the services provided in our everyday life.

They are contributing specific resources in the delivery of work around Wairarapa Moana to achieve the goals of the Project. This is by way of resourcing restoration work, project planning, operations and research.

Organisational roles

Department of Conservation (DOC)

DOC manages land that is under its control. This is land that is protected for conservation, historic, cultural and other reasons.

Their work includes saving threatened native species, managing pest plants and animals and restoration work.

Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC)

 GWRC carries out work on public and private land. This includes the management and protection of biodiversity, biodiversity monitoring, biosecurity, environmental monitoring, flood protection (refer to the section on the Lower Wairarapa Valley Development Scheme), land management and environmental protection.

South Wairarapa District Council (SWDC)

SWDC develops and maintains public land within their ownership.

SWDC land within the vicinity of Wairarapa Moana includes the Lake Domain Reserve at the northern end of Wairarapa Moana and Lake Ferry Reserves on the eastern side of Lake Onoke.

Iwi - Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa and Rangitane o Wairarapa 

Tangata whenua are kaitiaki of Wairarapa Moana. They have an inherent role to protect and restore the mauri of the Moana. Iwi provides advice for the project on cultural values and on ensuring that these are integral to restoration activities.
