Celebrating World Wetlands at Lake Wairarapa

Visitors had a chance to see and learn about some of our native freshwater and wetland plants and animals at a sheltered and peaceful western Lake Wairarapa site. Exploring from a picnic area at Waiorongomai Station (access to the start of a Remutaka Range track) provided examples of native plants and aquatic invertebrates found in the Waiorongomai River and a track leading through mature native trees to swampy wetland.

Some knowledgeable guides engaged visitors in some activities down at the stream, hearing about natural history and cultural values along a forest/wetland walk, learning tricks from Pete Monk on nature photography and hearing stories about our native fish, written by local freshwater ecologist, Amber McEwan.
