Prior to 2016 there was a 3rd group involved with the wetlands project. The Wairarapa Moana Coordinating Committee had representatives from all stakeholder organisations.

Fresh Start For Fresh Water was a separate project run from 2012 to 2015. Funding was provided from Wairarapa Moana Wetlands Project and the Ministry for the Environment. This project involved programmes of work which aimed to reverse the continuing degradation of wetland habitat around the edge of Lakes Wairarapa and Onoke.
